Pet Licensing Information – Town of Coronation

Bylaw No. 2021-675"ANIMAL CONTROL BYLAW" Town of Coronation

Welcome to the Town of Coronation’s Pet Licensing page! To ensure the safety of all pets and residents, it is mandatory under Bylaw No. 2021-675 that all dogs and cats over the age of six (6) months be licensed annually. Below you will find all the necessary information on how to register your pets and the process we use to manage the system.

Why License Your Pet?

Licensing your pet helps the Town of Coronation keep accurate records and ensures that, in the event your pet gets lost, they can be returned to you quickly and safely. Additionally, licensing your pet helps the Town manage and enforce local bylaws for the benefit of all residents.

Who Needs to Register?

All residents who own a dog or cat aged six (6) months or older must register their pet annually. This applies to:

  • Existing residents with pets over 6 months.
  • New residents moving to Coronation with pets over 6 months (must register within 30 days of moving).
  • New pet owners (must register within 30 days of becoming a pet owner).

How to Register

  1. Pay the required license fee – Refer to Schedule "A" of Bylaw No. 2021-675 for fee details.
  2. Renew your license every year by paying the applicable fee before January 15th.

What Happens if You Don’t Register?

If you fail to register your pet by January 15th, fines will be imposed. Any outstanding fines that remain unpaid by year-end will be added to your property taxes, in accordance with Section 553 of the Alberta Municipal Government Act.

Under the MGA, municipalities in Alberta have the authority to add unpaid fines, such as those for failing to register your pet, to a property owner's tax roll. This process ensures that unpaid fines can be collected in the same manner as property taxes if they remain unpaid after the required notices and deadlines.

Lost Your License Tag?

If your pet’s license tag is lost or damaged, you can obtain a replacement by visiting the Town office and paying the replacement fee of $20.00 outlined in Schedule "A" of the bylaw.
